Solo exhibition "Pearl paintings" in the Polvorin room of the Citadel of Pamplona

THE "PEARL PAINTINGS"

There is a metaphor in Eastern culture that explains how the most beautiful things can come out of the expression of pain. This metaphor is the process of creating a pearl.

Pearls are the result of a reaction of a foreign particle becoming encysted in the soft body of molluscs. Molluscs use this reaction as a form of defence against what they consider an aggression. Thus we deduce that something as beautiful as a pearl is, in reality, the result of the elaboration of a process arising from a harmful agent.

Applying this same idea to expressionist art, we can understand the concept of ‘pearl paintings’.

These are those that stand out for the emotional charge from which they start and which they transmit with great clarity, cleanliness and beauty.

I must clarify that these emotions are not necessarily those that have traditionally been considered as negative, they are also based on emotions of exuberance, joy and fullness. That is to say, what is taken into account are the emotions themselves, regardless of whether they are passionate or subtle, aggressive and harmful or pleasurable and voluptuous... and we do this in order to use them as an expressive and liberating means as well as an aesthetic means.

And this is how ‘pearl paintings’ are born.
